The South Sudan Institute of Democracy and Peace (SSIDP) was founded by a group of Diaspora South Sudanese, many of whom are residents of the United States of America. It was founded in order to address and meet the challenges of building democratic governance and maintenance of peace in South Sudan. The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) by the Government of Sudan (GOS) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLM/SPLA) on January 9, 2005 in Nairobi, Kenya, has ushered in prospects and challenges to democracy in South Sudan. The CPA gives the people of South Sudan the opportunity to participate in meaningful democracy for the first time in their history.
Therefore, in the absence of established democratic institutions, the South Sudan Institute of Democracy and Peace (SSIDP) aims to promote sustainable democracy and peace in South Sudan. The Institute is established to develop and promote democracy, peace, and democratic and peace culture, values and principles in South Sudan, by building democratic institutions, educating and empowering citizens in the fields of democratic and peaceful governance, social justice, human rights, and respect of the Rule of Law.
The Institute is established pursuant to the Georgia Nonprofit Corporations Code. It is therefore registered as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Georgia, USA. It came into being as a legal entity on December 22, 2005.
