The South Sudan Institute of Democracy and Peace (SSIDP) is a private, independent, nonprofit organization created in 2005. It is committed to promoting sustainable democracy and peace in South Sudan, based on active citizenship, democratic institutions and social justice. SSIDP is governed by a nonpartisan Board of Directors and an Executive. It has membership drawn from South Sudanese at home and abroad. People of other nationalities have also joined SSIDP as members, and are contributing effectively in the promotion of democracy and peace in South Sudan.
SSIDP is guided by the belief that, freedom is a universal human aspiration that can be realized through the establishment and promotion of democratic institutions, procedures and values. The Institute believes that democracy evolves according to the needs, traditions, and cultures of the people of South Sudan.
In supporting this process, SSIDP asserts its commitment to a long-term approach to strengthening democracy that will be supported through successive governments and administrations. The Institute recognizes the importance of ideas and the need to nourish an intellectual climate in which democracy can grow and flourish. SSIDP maintains international links with similar organizations worldwide through the international movement for democracy.
